The Science Behind Our Calculator
BMR Calculation
We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is considered the most accurate formula for calculating Basal Metabolic Rate:
- For Men: BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 × weight in kg) + (4.799 × height in cm) - (5.677 × age)
- For Women: BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 × weight in kg) + (3.098 × height in cm) - (4.330 × age)
TDEE Calculation
Total Daily Energy Expenditure is calculated by multiplying BMR by activity factors based on established research:
- Sedentary: BMR × 1.2
- Lightly Active: BMR × 1.375
- Moderately Active: BMR × 1.55
- Very Active: BMR × 1.725
Exercise Calories
Walking calories are calculated using MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values from the Compendium of Physical Activities, ensuring accurate exercise calorie estimates.
